Harriet E. Cooperman

Harriet Cooperman is a partner of Saul Ewing LLP, where she chaired the firm’s Labor and Employment Practice Group for over 20 years.  Ms. Cooperman concentrates her practice in the areas of labor and employment law, civil rights, business disputes, and general commercial litigation.  Ms. Cooperman is an American Arbitration Association-trained mediator.

During her more than 35 years as a practicing attorney, Ms. Cooperman has represented a broad and diverse range clients, including domestic and international public and private entities, in the manufacturing, financial services, professional services, healthcare, insurance, legal, consulting, technology, construction, hospitality, wholesale, and retail industries, governmental entities, nonprofits, labor unions and individuals. She has litigated numerous cases, both jury and non-jury, before courts and administrative agencies around the United States.  In 2007, Ms. Cooperman appeared as an expert witness on Maryland restrictive covenant law before the High Court of Justice in London, England.  Her opinions and analysis were cited by the Judge as being critical to his decision.

Ms. Cooperman is the Vice Chair of the Maryland State Higher Education Labor Relations Board, and has been a member of the Board since its inception in 2001, appointed to successive terms by three different governors. She has been an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Baltimore School of Law, where she taught traditional labor law and employment discrimination law. 

Ms. Cooperman is on the Board of Directors of the University of Maryland Medical Center, and is Chair of the Board’s Nominating and Governance Committee.  She also serves on the Board of Visitors of the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law.  Her past bar association positions include Chair of the Employer-Employee Relations Committee of the Torts and Insurance Practice Section of the American Bar Association, Chair of the Section on Labor and Employment Law of the Maryland State Bar Association, and Chair of Judicial Administration Committee of the Bar Association of Baltimore City.  Ms. Cooperman is a member of Leadership Maryland, Class of 2003.
